5 signs a career in technology is right for you!

You might’ve seen some stories in the media about the tech sector having difficulty finding talent. Today, technology plays a significant role in every industry, from supermarkets to the medical field. Proper representation of the consumers’ voice can only happen through having diverse teams. Because companies are aware that they need to focus on diversity, they’re keen to attract talent who bring a different perspective to the table. This opens up immense possibilities for people who are passionate about technology but might not have the traditional background.

And yes, that could be you! Does this sound exciting, and are you curious to find out if you have what it takes to succeed in this high-growth economy sector? Keep reading!

We listed 5 (surprising) signs that might mean you’re meant for a career in tech.

  1. You DON’T come from a tech background

Yes, you read that right. As mentioned above, tech companies realize the benefits of diversity in the workforce. Do you think you haven’t got any experience? Think again. Which skills do you use for your current position which could also be in use for your career in tech, also known as ‘transferable skills’? Are you working in HR? You most likely have excellent communication skills. Customer service representative? That means you have great problem-solving skills. The list can go on and on.

Think outside the box when it comes to experience and realize what you bring to the table.

2. You want to make a difference

Making a positive impact may not be the first thing that comes to mind when you think of a tech career. Dig a little deeper, though, and think about all the industries that rely on new technology innovations to improve global well-being. The health industry, for example, can make a massive impact through technology. Think about remote health care monitoring or surgical smart glasses. For the dutchies interested in this subject, listen to this podcast where one of Techionista’s Managing Directors, Vivianne, interviews Marlies Schijven. Marlies is Professor of Surgery at Amsterdam UMC. They have a personal conversation about the positive impact technology can make within the healthcare industry.

3. You like solving problems

Does a good old-fashioned puzzle get you excited? Great! Working in tech is a lot like solving a puzzle. You need patience, persistence, and enjoyment in going through the motions of trial and error. Where some might give up and get frustrated, you persist and get a high out of the sweet satisfaction you get once the puzzle is solved.

4. You’re curious and a lifelong learner

Are you always wanting to get to the very bottom of things? Have people told you that ‘you ask so many questions!’. According to a recruiter from Microsoft, curiosity is the single most important trait recruiters look for when finding new candidates. Why? Because tech moves fast and comes with many challenges on its way. To stay ahead of the curve, employers need to have a natural passion for understanding things to the bottom. Unlike hard skills like coding, genuine curiosity can not be taught. It’s a personality trait that comes naturally to some, and for those, a career in tech might just be the right fit.

5. You get excited about technology

Do you think everyone gets excited about the new Samsung flip phone (or the newest iPhone if you’re on that team)? Spoiler alert, they don’t. Some people couldn’t care less. As a true gadget guru, the newest technology gets your heart beating faster. Is your home all teched up, and do you consider Siri part of the family? Or does that temperature-controlling smart mug make your heart skip a beat? Awesome! Passion is important and will get you a long way while learning new skills.
